To die to your lower self would imply that you're enlightened. To be enlightened implies you no longer have any darkness to be triggered into your perception. No more illusion, no more semblance of reality passing as solid, like a sheet covering a ghost. 

And yet, in alchemy, in the negrido phase, where one transmutes base matter into gold, there is something to be transmuted after all. It may hardly weigh anything, but, it certainly takes up time and space. It is illusory in the sense that, very often, parts of the lower self disappear with awareness. But just because it's ephemeral doesn't mean it doesn't exist... it simply dissolves via the glorious end of alchemy.
